Why dye?

In the following, we will explain which types of roses we recommend, which are best for dyeing, what you need for dyeing to achieve the desired look and how you can preserve the wonderfully dyed roses.
Recommended rose varieties
In fact, the white rose is the one we recommend most for your dyeing adventure. Similar to paint, white mixes easily with any other color to achieve the exact shade you want at the end of the process.
We recommend using our signature Infinity Roses to get the best out of them. These are real roses that last a year or more. If cared for properly, they will retain their beautiful appearance.
Infinity Roses are real, high-quality flowers grown in Ecuador. In our studio in Berlin, our florists create beautiful flower boxes and other Infinity products for you.
The different methods
Our focus is on showing you how to dye your own roses at home. However, we would also like to help you be as well informed as possible by introducing you to several popular methods for dyeing roses.
Absorption: Absorption dyeing is a professional dyeing method that is used (usually by a florist) to change the color of a freshly cut flower before it is sold in a store. The flowers absorb the dye – hence the name – and are then placed in warm water that reacts with the chemicals in the dye. The flower is then left to rest in the dyeing liquid for up to an hour, which draws the color up through the stem.
Dip dyeing: The dip-dyeing process is similar to dyeing Easter eggs. You get a professional dye and pour it into a container before dipping the flower into the dye with the stem, making sure it is fully submerged. You only need to hold the flower in the dye for a few seconds until it is properly cured. When pulling it out, be sure to avoid getting the dye on your clothes or body.
Color spray: For this method, you buy a special color spray from a can. While this product thoroughly colors your roses, it is also more difficult to control than the other methods.
DIY paint: A way to make your own flower paint. More on this in the following sections.
To dye roses at home, you will need:
- White roses
- Food coloring
- Rubber gloves
- Cups or glasses (the number depends on how many roses you want to dye)
- Water
- A razor blade or utility knife (optional)
- Thick cardboard or a cutting mat (optional)
- Tape (optional)
The steps to dye your roses
Take your roses and make sure they are prepared for dyeing. This means plucking off the leaves and cutting the stems to a length of about 30 centimeters.
Pour water into a cup before adding the food coloring.
Place a single rose in the cup you want to dye.
Let your roses sit in the cups for at least four hours to achieve lighter or pastel colors. For brighter roses, let the roses sit for several days, until you are satisfied with the color. Sometimes it's better to play it safe and let the roses sit longer than they should to get the maximum color.
How to store the roses
Make sure your colorful roses are not exposed to direct sunlight, as the roses can absorb the light and destroy the beautiful colors. It is helpful not to water dyed roses and to arrange them in a beautiful vase. We hope you succeed in preserving your roses for a long time and that we were able to give you a little insight into dyeing roses.
