Why dye?

Some of you may be wondering why you should dye roses at all. Natural roses are very beautiful and elegant as they are. But if you had the opportunity to safely and easily transform an already pretty rose into a stunning rose in one of your favorite colors, wouldn't you want to give it a try?

Below we explain which rose varieties we recommend, which are best suited for dyeing, what you need to dye to achieve the desired look and how you can store the beautifully dyed roses.

Recommended rose varieties

In fact, the white rose is the one we recommend the most for your dyeing adventure. Similar to paint, the white color can be easily mixed with any other to get the exact shade you want at the end of the process.

We recommend using our signature Infinity roses to get the best out of them. These are real roses that last a year or more. If you look after them properly, they will retain their beautiful appearance.

Infinity roses are real, high-quality flowers that are grown in Ecuador. In our studio in Berlin, our florists conjure up beautiful flower boxes and other Infinity products for you.

The different methods

Our focus is on showing you how to dye your own roses at home. But we also want to help you be as informed as possible by introducing you to several popular methods for dyeing roses.

Absorption: Absorption dye is a professional dyeing method used (usually by a florist) to change the color of a freshly cut flower before it is sold in a store. The flowers absorb the dye - hence the name - and are then placed in warm water, which reacts with the chemicals in the dye. The flower is then left to rest in the dye liquid for up to an hour, which draws the color up the stem.

Dip dyeing: The dip dye process is similar to dyeing Easter eggs. You get a professional dye and pour it into a container before dipping the flower with the stem into the dye, making sure it is completely submerged. You only need to hold the flower in the paint for a few seconds until it has hardened properly. When pulling it out, avoid getting the paint on your clothes or body.

Color spray: For this method, you buy a special color spray from a can. While this is a product that will color your roses thoroughly, it is also more difficult to control than the other methods.

DIY paint: A way to make your own flower paint. More on this in the following sections.

To dye roses at home, you will need:

  • White roses
  • Food coloring
  • Rubber gloves
  • Cups or glasses (the number depends on how many roses you want to dye)
  • Water
  • A razor or box cutter (optional)
  • Thick cardboard or a cutting mat (optional)
  • Adhesive tape (optional)

The steps to coloring your roses

Take your roses and make sure they are prepared for dyeing. This means plucking off the leaves and shortening the stems to a length of about 30 centimeters.

Pour water into a cup before adding the food coloring.

Place a single rose in the cup you want to dye.

Let your roses rest in the cups for at least four hours to get lighter or pastel colors. To get brighter roses, you should let the roses rest for several days until you are satisfied with the color. Sometimes it's better to play it safe and leave the roses even longer than they should to get the maximum coloring out of them.

How to store the roses

Make sure that your colored roses are not exposed to direct sunlight, as the roses can absorb the light and destroy the beautiful hues. It is helpful not to water colored roses and to arrange them in a beautiful vase. We hope that you manage to preserve your roses for a long time and that we have been able to give you a little insight into coloring roses.
